Guatemala is located in Central America, bordered by Mexico to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea and Belize to the east, and El Salvador and Honduras to the south. The country comprises of towering mountains and volcanoes, temperate plateaus, tropical plains, near-desert river valleys, lowland jungles and swamps. Guatemala is known as “Land of Eternal Springs."

The people are a mixture of indigenous Indians and Latinos (Indians and European descent). The population is approximately 10.1 million people. There are many infants and toddlers available for adoption. On occasion, there are also older children available. Boys are more readily available than girls. The wait for a baby girl is generally a little longer. You may request the gender of the child you prefer and the age range. We place primarily infants.

We will walk you through all the paperwork, compiling your dossier for your adoption. We believe in an open line of communication and are always available to our families, before, during and even after they have returned home with their children.

Referrals are generally made within 0 to 3 months after your dossier is received and you have your I-171H or I-797C clearance/approval from CIS .

All our newborn referrals are given a newborn screening which can identify more than 50 disorders of body chemistry. The test identifies cystic fibrosis and mental retardation. The tests are taken by the pediatrician in Guatemala and then sent to the lab in the USA for the results. There is no additional charge for this - it is part of the agency fee...

We provide updates on the case as we receive them from our attorneys. The majority of our cases are relinquishments, which means the birth mother relinquished her baby to the attorney. The American Embassy requires DNA testing on the birth mother and the baby, and this cost is passed on to the adoptive parent(s). The birth mother must give her written consent a total of 4 times during the adoption process. Form G-28 (we will provide you with this form) must be submitted in order for the attorney to represent you at the U.S. Embassy and to get authorization for the DNA testing to be done. This can only be done after the dossier, I-171H or I-797C clearance from CIS and I-600 are in Guatemala.

On an average, it takes 4 to 7 months to complete the process. We have had a few cases completed in 3.5 months, but this is not the norm. Sometimes the case moves more quickly and at other times, it can move somewhat slower, especially if it falls within the time when courts slow down during certain holidays (Christmas and Holy Week being the biggest religious holidays). As of September 2003, we cannot give an exact time frame as to how long the process will actually take from referral to coming home as it is all contingent upon the social worker who is assigned the case in the Tribunal and the reviewer who has the case in the PGN.

We highly recommend that the family travel to the child’s birth country and physically see the child during the adoption process. The child will stay with the family, at their hotel, during their visit. When the child is ready to come home, the family will be notified that all the paperwork is in order (pink slip issued and as of 9/26/05, the U.S. Embassy now gives scheduled Visa appointments) and travel is advisable to go to the U.S. Embassy for the child’s Immigrant Visa (IR-3 if the family physically saw the child during the process, and an IR-4 if the family did not see the child during the process).

As of February 2004, children arriving home with the IR-3 Visa will automatically receive the Certificate of Citizenship in the mail.

Our agency imposes no upper age restrictions for adopting in Guatemala, and singles are welcome. We also work with single men on a case-by-case basis. The children are beautiful. Most of the children have a light to medium olive complexion with dark hair and the biggest, most gorgeous eyes you’ve ever seen! Our babies are in private foster care where they receive an abundance of love, nurturing, and stimulation from the foster family. They also receive excellent medical care by a private physician.

We are in need of paper ready families for baby boys. (Paper ready means - completed dossier and CIS approval).
