Do we have to earn a certain amount of money in order to qualify? CIS (Citizenship & Immigration Services) requires you earn 125% above poverty level. In addition to the CIS requirements, adopting from China, one must earn $10,000 per person in the family plus $10,000 for the child you will be adopting. Can singles adopt? Yes, for our Guatemalan and Kazakhstan programs single women may adopt. Please note that not all attorneys will work with single men What is the maximum age in order to adopt? This depends upon the country. For Guatemala, there is no upper age requirement. For China the maximum age is 50 (55 for a special needs child) and for Kazakhstan, one cannot be older than 55. Can we choose the gender of the child we wish to adopt? In Guatemala and Kazakhstan – yes. In China – the majority of the children are girls. Can I adopt more than one child? This depends upon the country. Once the Hague is implemented in the USA, you will only be able to adopt one child at a time. Why does foreign adoption take so long? The length of time involved in the foreign adoption process is due to the numerous adoption requirements of not only the U.S. government, but also a foreign government. What type of payment schedule does the agency have? Payments are made in increments during the process. Application fee is due at time of application. First part of agency fee is due with the signing of the Service Contract. At time of referral – balance of Agency fee and first part of foreign program fee are due. Balance of foreign fee is due prior to child coming home. What is the fee for the child’s Visa? Presently the fee is $380 at the U.S. Embassy in the child’s country. How will the agency ensure that all paperwork has been prepared accurately? We check the documents with a fine tooth comb. We know what our attorneys expect and what we expect. Anything that is not done correctly must be redone. Our families can attest to the fact that we are very particular when it comes to the dossier being done correctly. Can application be switched to another country if regulations change or a moratorium is declared? Usually if one has a referral in a country and a moratorium comes into effect, the adoption in the process will be “grand-fathered” in. Should there not be a referral, the adoptive parents can transfer their agency fee to one of our other programs - new documents may be needed to meet the dossier requirements of that country. . I have CIS approval – can a child be referred to me? Our agency will not present a child to a family unless they also have a completed dossier to meet the country’s requirement. This is in addition to having the I-171H approval from CIS. What makes your agency different from the others? We are a smaller agency, by choice, and are available to our families 24/7. We also offer a comprehensive newborn screening test for our babies in Guatemala at no additional cost to our families. How much does the international adoption process cost? This depends upon the program – contact our agency and we will gladly advise you of the fees for each of the countries. Why does foreign adoption cost so much? The costs for foreign adoptions fall into three categories; agency processing and placement fees, foreign government and attorney fees, and travel costs. Does your agency provide home study services? For families in certain areas of New York, we can do the home study. We have several social workers throughout the metropolitan New York area. All home studies are arranged through our Social Work Director. For families outside of New York, our Social Work Director will review the home study to make certain it meets with our requirements and the requirements of the foreign country. |
