September 2008 October 2005 July 18, 2007 The ideal place would be where there were children who would never have the opportunity of being adopted and having a family. Karing Angels wanted to give back to the country that gives us our precious children to place with forever families. One of our attorney’s daughter, took us to Hospice San Jose located in Sacatepequez, Guatemala – between Guatemala City and Antigua. This is a home that has children from 3 months old up to 14, all of whom have HIV/AIDS. There are approximately 60 children now and the capacity is 100. We were taken to the pharmacy and shown the “cocktails” the children are given by syringe, orally. Asked if the medication tasted good and was told the taste is horrid, but they try to camouflage it by adding in honey or chocolate. The children are given the medication twice a day and the cost for the medication is approximately $1,000 per month, per child. As long as they take their medication, they have a better chance at living a longer life. The facility was very clean and we were quite impressed by the staff, the place, and the children. No one knew we were coming. We were shown the rooms where the children sleep – 6 children to a room and each room has their own private bathroom. Children are assigned to their rooms according to age and gender. They do not have boys and girls together in the rooms. For the babies, there are 5 cribs to a room. The furnishings were beautiful and each room tastefully decorated. The children are educated and even given home work. We were shown the classroom, the desks, the computers, and awards children have received. The children were all clean and nicely dressed, hair well groomed. We decided to make this the charity that our agency would donate to yearly and made a policy that 3% of the agency fee from each AP, would be donated to this wonderful organization. We will also raise money through our yearly event when we do fund raising. While at Hospice San Jose, Karing Angels gave a donation of $2,000 which seemed to have shocked the Director. Not only did we donate, but my 10 year old daughter handed the Director a Guatemalan pocketbook filled with coins, dollar bills and Guatemalan currency as a donation for the children. The Director was very moved by her generosity. We also donated some Build-a-Bears that children made in the USA on May 19th to celebrate adoption. My older daughter took many photographs of Hospice San Jose and the many children. One little girl ran up to me, holding on tightly and hugging me……pulled at my heart strings. Leaving Hospice San Jose fulfilled an empty spot in our hearts, knowing that Karing Angels will be helping these children.
